Chris is one hell of a guy. Long story short, he runs too much in weird shoes. We went down to Spanish banks and knocked off a few frames for his profile in The Ubyssey. Here’s what ran, plus a few extras.

Well, it’s a bit late, but I just got back from a conference in Ottawa, I decided to stop through Toronto on my way and see a bit of the city, catch a Jays game and meet up with old friends and new. I also saw off Arshy Mann into his new role as National Bureau Chief of CUP. Here’s a few photos from both the conference and Toronto.

Well, after two years at the Ubyssey, I left. But not without getting the opportunity to make a ton of great images along the way. I’ve been editing and updating my portfolio for the last few days, and I’ve added a ton of new images. You can see all of them below!

Also, I’ve started a Facebook page, so go on over and check it out!

It’s always weird leaving. For the past two years, I’ve been working at The Ubyssey, it’s been wild. Last night we finished the last issue of the year, phoned the printer and put it to bed. I handed the rage booze over to Kai Jacobson (who took the photo below), who will be taking the reins over next year. And we took a group shot to commemorate the moment, doing our best to look exactly how we all feel at 10:45 after a long issue.

So stuff on this blog will become less Ubyssey related, I suspect. I might even update it more often. Here’s hoping anyways.

I’m headed to Calgary this weekend to cover the women’s basketball team as they head in ranked No. 2 after they killed Regina, the No. 1 ranked team, two weeks ago in the Canada West final.

Part of the travel deal? A video, so here it is.

In today’s digital age, it’s unusual to share a whole shoot. After all, you can take hundreds of photos in minutes and simply delete those that don’t work out.

Sometimes though, you don’t have a lot of time to take photos. Here, I present an entire shoot in nine frames, for the Our Campus section of the Ubyssey (you can catch the article on ubyssey.ca). I was in a rush and didn’t have time to fool around much.

A first test shot, the white balance is out and it’s underexposed.

The exposure and colour is all right, but the framing is too loose.

Okay, this is the framing I was looking for, now to get Nick doing something more interesting.

Everything fits! It’s all in the balance.

Nick did an excellent job of keeping everything on his head, but the concentration left him looking a little angry, I got him to lighten up a bit for the final frame, below.

A couple more out takes, safety shots.

I had some time over the break to take some footage and finally finished cutting together a montage. A big thanks to Jon Chiang for the idea—I’m sharpening up my video for the end of my term at The Ubyssey.

A busy week, so apologies for how old this is (a whole 10 days). Josh Curran, Chris Borchert and I went out to make our cover and a big splashy image about UBC’s Formula SAE team. It ran in The Ubyssey last week, one of culture’s few and far between covers, I was pretty happy with it.

We used four lights, two crossing over the team, one overhead with a beauty dish, and one behind the team, lighting behind the garage and creating the latticework pattern. For inside, we moved a light to highlight the sign as well. Original pictures and cover design below!

The guys wanted a Tebow shot for themselves so we did that too.

A Little behind the scenes action.

The issue

Ever gotten the runaround?

That was my experience with UBC facilities/security last week. Last year, we decided to take Jeremy McElroy’s photo from the top of Gage. A resoundingly easy process, I called up UBC SHHS and they let me onto the roof three days later.

This year, I decided the clock tower would make a nice location. Turns out UBC is a little more tight wadded when it comes to building access. After several emails and phone calls over a couple of days, I finally figured out who to call (did you know UBC separates it’s facilities by coloured zones? Me neither). A couple more phone calls later and I found out that not only did UBC insist on sending UBC security along for the ride, but that for the 45 minutes the photo was going to take, they were going to ask a whopping $45/hour, four hour minimum.

So that went out the window, and we made this awesome cover instead. Here’s some outtakes and the setup, cover image is the vertical on the right. Behind the scenes photo courtesy Hayley Kandt! A big thanks to Chris Borchert and Pamela Haaf as well for their work on this.

So it’s been a while, but we finally published these photos from the late fall. I went down to Seattle to shoot a weekend of sailing with UBC’s Collegiate Sailing Team. You can catch the article on the Ubyssey website. Here’s a few frames from the weekend.
